Manu National Park

Overview

Manu National Park is one of the most biodiverse destinations in Peru and an extraordinary place to experience the Amazon rainforest. Located between the regions of Cusco and Madre de Dios, this protected natural area connects the Tropical Andes with the Amazon Basin, creating an exceptional variety of landscapes, ecosystems and wildlife habitats. It is recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site and forms part of the Manu Biosphere Reserve.

A Manu National Park tour from Cusco takes travelers through dramatic changes in scenery, from high Andean valleys and misty cloud forests to tropical lowland rainforest. Along the journey, visitors may observe colorful birds, monkeys, macaws, giant otters, caimans and other native Amazonian species in their natural environment. Jaguars also inhabit the park, although sightings are uncommon and depend entirely on nature.

Manu Cloud Forest

The journey from Cusco passes through the spectacular Manu Cloud Forest, where mist-covered mountains, waterfalls and dense vegetation create one of the most beautiful landscapes in southeastern Peru. This ecosystem is especially popular among birdwatchers and nature photographers.

Andean Cock-of-the-Rock Observation Area

The Andean cock-of-the-rock is one of the most recognizable birds found along the route to Manu. Early-morning visits provide opportunities to observe the males gathering in traditional display areas surrounded by lush cloud forest.

Amazon Rainforest

The lowland rainforest reveals a completely different environment filled with towering trees, tropical plants and remarkable wildlife. Guided walks allow visitors to learn about medicinal plants, forest ecology, animal tracks and the complex relationships within the Amazon ecosystem.

Macaw and Parrot Clay Licks

Clay licks are among the most memorable wildlife attractions in Manu. At certain locations and times of day, macaws, parrots and parakeets gather on exposed riverbanks to consume mineral-rich clay, creating a colorful natural spectacle.

Oxbow Lakes

Oxbow lakes are peaceful bodies of water formed by former river channels. Exploring these lagoons by canoe or traditional raft may offer opportunities to observe water birds, monkeys, caimans and giant otters.

Amazon Wildlife

Manu National Park protects an exceptional range of wildlife, including monkeys, giant otters, black caimans, harpy eagles, macaws and jaguars. SERNANP reports more than 1,000 bird species as well as hundreds of mammal, amphibian, reptile and fish species within the protected area.

Manu River

The Manu River is one of the main natural routes through the rainforest. Boat journeys offer panoramic views of the jungle and opportunities to watch birds, monkeys and other animals along the riverbanks.

Info

Most Manu National Park tours from Cusco require several days because of the destination’s remote location. Common itineraries range from three or four days in the Manu Cultural Zone to longer expeditions that explore more isolated rainforest areas. Access conditions, permits and authorized routes depend on the selected program.

The journey usually begins with an overland drive from Cusco through the Andes, Paucartambo and the cloud forest. Travelers then continue toward the Amazon lowlands, where transportation may include motorized boats, canoes and guided forest walks. Official tourism information identifies Cusco and Puerto Maldonado as the main access points to the park.

Manu has a warm, humid tropical climate in its lower areas, while the cloud forest can be cooler and wetter. Travelers should bring lightweight clothing, long-sleeved shirts, comfortable walking shoes, rain protection, insect repellent, sunscreen, a hat, binoculars and a reusable water bottle.

Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed because the animals live freely in their natural habitat. However, traveling with an experienced local guide greatly improves the opportunity to identify birds, mammals, plants, tracks and animal sounds.

Booking with a professional Cusco travel agency provides organized transportation, experienced naturalist guides, accommodation, meals and logistical assistance throughout the expedition.
